Second Annual BYU Design Review Competition

Second Annual BYU Design Review Competition

The BYU Design Review is celebrating its second anniversary this month. Hooray!

To celebrate we want to invite you to compete in the:

Second Annual BYU Design Review Competition!

Being two years old means the BYU Design Review is now a toddler.  Lots of good things come in two’s. Or in pairs. Or in a couple: Bikes, Binoculars, Boots. And let’s not forget about shoes, shorts, and shades (sunglasses).

So, let’s design something with “two”…

Here are the Design Competition details:

You must redesign, improve upon, or completely reinvent the concept of a pair of scissors or tongs. That’s it. Your design should be unique, refreshing, innovative, creative, and push the traditional concept of scissors or tongs. Scissors or tongs haven’t really evolved in many years and it’s time for an upgrade. Consider size, color, dimensions, material, shape, layers, interactions, usability, life cycle, electrical components, actuators, mechanisms, etc. The sky is the limit.

But there is one requirement: Your pair of scissors or tongs must be both safe and useful.

Submit your design to the BDR email address (designreview@byu.edu).

Design submissions must be summarized, presented, and/or described on a maximum of “two” pages (8.5 x 11 inches) and be in PDF file format. However, those two pages can have just about anything you want. You can also attach supplementary files, if desired, like a video, more images, drawings, sketches, 3D models, a printed part (which is hard to attach in an email…), and anything else you can dream up. Just be sure to tell the story of your design, with appropriate descriptions, annotations, or explanations.

Design submissions are due October 15th, 11:59pm.

Prizes will stick with our theme and include useful design and engineering tools. The person (or team of two!) with the best design, as evaluated by the staff of the BDR, will receive the first-place prize of an Irwin 10-piece Vise-Grip Set. Second and third place will receive, respectively, a Klien pliers/cutter set and heavy-duty industrial shears (Chris Mattson’s favorite pair of scissors).

Only one submission per person (or team of two!)

Good Luck!
