First Annual BYU Design Review Competition

First Annual BYU Design Review Competition

Let’s all just admit it. It’s disappointing that many sports are put on hold, clubs are canceled, events are postponed, and many enjoyable activities are still infeasible for students, alumni, and staff on campuses all across the world.

We feel the same way and hope we are closer to the end than the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In lieu of the events that we (and likely you) are not able to participate in, we want to invite you to compete in the:

First Annual BYU Design Review Competition!

This competition is held in part to celebrate the BYU Design Review’s one-year anniversary. That’s right, we turn one later this month and plan to celebrate with cake, candles, and candy!

To that end, here are the Design Competition details:

You must redesign, improve upon, or completely reinvent the concept of a birthday candle. That’s it. Your design should be unique, refreshing, innovative, creative, and push the traditional concept of birthday candles on cakes. Candles haven’t really evolved in many years and it’s time for a reset. Consider the size, color, dimensions, material, shape, texture, layers, interactions, usability, life-cycle, electrical components, actuators, bio-degradable elements, edible parts, mechanisms, etc. The sky is the limit.

But there is one requirement: Your new candle could be safely placed and used on a child’s birthday cake.

Submit your design to the BYU Design Review: designreview@byu.edu.

Design submissions can be a video, an image, a drawing, a sketch, a 3D model, a printed part… anything! Just be sure to tell the story of your design, with appropriate descriptions, annotations, or explanations.

Design submissions must be received by September 30th, 11:59 pm.

The person (or team) with the best design, as evaluated by the staff of the BYU Design Review, will receive the first-place prize of a Creality Ender 3 Pro 3D Printer. Second place, and honorable mentions, will receive an Arduino starter kit, calipers, a Milwaukee fastback utility knife, or a Klien screwdriver.

Only one submission per person.

You have one month…. Good Luck!
