Five Articles From 2019 You May Have Missed
You might have already set your design-related new year resolutions, but don’t forget about all the great content from last year to inspire you in 2020. Here are five BYU Design Review Articles you may have missed in 2019:
The LEGO Brick by Dallin Cordon and Chris Mattson. Why should you read it? The article will give you a greater appreciation for the magic behind the LEGO brick, which is centered on the development and use of the LEGO Unit. Besides this, at least go and check out Dallin’s amazing LEGO renderings.
The Hype Cycle by John Salmon. Why you should read it? It’s just plain interesting, as it digs into how consumers’ expectations for products change over time, and how we as designers ought to plan for and capitalize on changing expectations.
Magic Box of Pins (and its effect on my view of design) by Larry Howell. Why should you read it? The article discusses the amazing reality of our globalized world and the fact that it has given us extremely low cost of goods.
20 Questions of Product Development by Chris Mattson. Why should you read it? It’s pretty much guaranteed that these 20 questions will be asked about a product during its development. Might as well know what they are, and work to get meaningful answers for them before they’re asked. It will make your next design review that much more bearable.
The Golf Ball Dimple by Garrett Barnum. Why should you read it? Garrett takes an iconic design and tells us why it is the way it is. With a bit of history and a bit of technical talk, the article is short, fun, and insightful.
